Fei-Fei Li and Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott "Behind the Tech" Podcast on Human-Centered AI

Fei-Fei Li joined Microsoft CTO, Kevin Scott, for a wide-ranging conversation about artificial intelligence on Kevin's podcast, "Behind the Tech."

Fei-Fei is the Denning Family Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. She previously served as the Director of the Stanford AI Lab (SAIL) from 2013 to 2018.

Fei-Fei is considered one of the pioneering researchers in the field of artificial intelligence. In this conversation, she discussed how her academic career actually started with an early love of physics. Inspired by great physicists of the 20th century who went on to study life science, that first love grew into a strong interest in intelligence during college.

For her PhD dissertation research, Fei-Fei looked into a combination of cognitive neuroscience and computer vision (which is now known as “artificial intelligence”). She shared how one of her PhD experiments was one of the first studies to quantify how much people see at the moment we open our eye – from objects to other people to movement. Fei-Fei went on to invent ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a critical large-scale dataset and benchmarking effort that has contributed to the latest developments in deep learning and AI. Today, she dedicates her research to human-centered AI and is a national leading voice for advocating diversity in STEM and AI.

Kevin and Fei-Fei discussed her ideas about everything from visual intelligence to why the study of AI needs artists, writers, social scientists, and philosophers.
