Part 1: Removing Impediments to a Robust AI Innovative Ecosystem
If artificial general intelligence is the goal to some, how do they build a flourishing, innovative ecosystem to get us there safely? In this fireside discussion, HAI Co-Director Fei-Fei Li and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen debate open- versus closed-source AI, describe what a healthy AI ecosystem looks like, consider industry’s role in these decisions, and define a realistic pathway to applied AI.
Speakers
Part 2: Guardrails and Regulation for a Vibrant AI Ecosystem
In this session, HAI Deputy Director Russell Wald and Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former California Supreme Court Justice, explore the potential impact of AGI on society, delving into the intricate intersection of technology, philosophy, and humanity's quest for intelligence. While acknowledging this transformative power, they will also highlight the associated risks and dangers, such as loss of control, unintended consequences, and existential threats to humanity. The conversation will provide a deeper perspective on the necessary regulations and discuss how, when applied appropriately, they can bring confidence in the market and allow for a better AI innovative ecosystem to flourish.
Speakers
Keynote: AI at Stanford
Incoming President, Jonathan Levin, will give a brief Keynote Address, discussing AI at Stanford University.
Speakers
Accelerating Science with AI
How will AI change what we know and understand about the world? In this session, HAI Co-Director Fei-Fei Li talks with computer scientist and industry leader David Siegel about how this technology is advancing science as we know it — in robotic learning, neuroscience, and in our work in higher education — and requiring a more interdisciplinary approach.

Lunch/Research Poster Session
The poster session will be available for conference attendees to interact with throughout the full conference day. The poster session aims to showcase the work of the HAI community over the last five years, highlighting the research and projects that HAI has been involved with or supported in some capacity.
Fireside Chat: Implementation of AI in Society at Scale: How do we Augment the Human Experience?
While AI has the potential to replace human jobs, it also offers opportunities for education, training, and augmentation, ultimately improving individuals' performance in tasks ranging from writing to healthcare. Recognizing humans' social nature, HAI emphasizes the importance of AI systems conforming to cultural conventions and balancing their needs with those of humans in interactions. By integrating research in design methods with AI applications in fields like education and healthcare, HAI strives to develop AI systems with enhanced communication capabilities, fostering better human-machine collaboration and acceptance.

Closing Performance: Vibin’ with Ge and Celeste
AI and other transformative technologies that seem to tap creativity also tap into our most cherished ideas and deepest anxieties about what makes us human. AI begs answers to thorny questions about authenticity, valuation, provenance, creator compensation, artist copyright, and, by putatively automating creativity, insists we question tacit assumptions about the very nature of creativity and the creative process.
This closing session will have an exciting demo and live performance by our very own Stanford faculty and student!

Reception
Join us for a reception with food, drinks, and networking. The poster session will continue to be available for viewing in the pavilion area.
Godmothers of AI (private session)
This by-invitation session will elevate the work and the vision of an underrepresented community of women scientists who have been leading the AI revolution — from the beginning to now. AI is the biggest and most consequential business, financial, legal, technological, and cultural story of our time, and in this panel, you will hear from the frontline creators. This session will be closed door and by invitation-only.
