Amy Tong

Amy Tong was appointed Secretary of Government Operations by Governor Gavin Newsom in March of 2022, elevated to the role after serving as the state’s Chief Information Officer and Director of the California Department of Technology.

Secretary Tong’s commitment to public service is rooted in her experience as a first-generation immigrant who relied on public services to acclimate to California after coming to the U.S. with her family in 1986. 

Her portfolio includes state workforce development, technology and innovation, procurement and general services, state revenue, public employee and teachers' pension systems, victims' compensation, state regulations as well as the statewide financial system and cradle to career educational data system.

As a member of Governor Newsom’s cabinet, she is leading work on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), embedding DEIA in state operations and establishing the nation’s largest broadband middle mile network.
