Policy

HAI plays a leading role not only in producing critical scholarship on AI governance and appropriate uses, but by also serving as a convener of national and global AI discussions.

Policy Impact

At HAI, we believe AI should be inspired by human intelligence, developed to augment human capabilities, and designed and applied with consideration for its impact on people and society. Stanford HAI engages with AI leaders across all sectors and trains policymakers around the world on these issues, and has uniquely positioned itself to be a natural hub for policy impact in human-centered AI.

Policy Publications

Stanford HAI leverages the university’s strength across disciplines—such as computer science, business, economics,
education, law, literature, medicine, neuroscience, philosophy, sustainability, and more—to create innovative research
on AI. We translate cutting-edge, multidisciplinary AI research for the policy audience and produce original AI-related
policy research to equip policymakers with tools to understand and govern the technology.

Policy Outreach and Engagement

Stanford HAI actively engages with government leaders at the national and international level to ensure that cutting-edge AI research is effectively communicated to inform their decision-making. From private briefings to congressional boot camps, Stanford HAI collaborates directly with policymakers to ensure AI policy efforts are developed with a human-centered approach.

Training for Policymakers

Policymakers and regulators are at the front lines of decision-making on emerging technologies such as AI. Recognizing the valuable role they play in the AI governance ecosystem, Stanford HAI has developed specialized training programs to meet their needs. In August 2022, we hosted the Congressional Boot Camp on Artificial Intelligence for Hill staffers, and in October 2022, we launched our first virtual series on the basics of AI for the General Services Administration’s AI Community of Practice.

In the past, we collaborated with the European University Institute to organize an intensive online policy lab on AI for policymakers in the EU and U.S. in 2020 and worked with Stanford campus partners to co-host our first AI and cyber boot camp for Congressional staff in 2019.

Policy Research

National AI Research Resource

HAI led efforts with top universities and lawmakers to create a National AI Research Resource that would provide researchers with compute power and government datasets needed for education and research, and democratize AI research, education, and innovation.

Healthcare AI Policy Committee

HAI's multidisciplinary committee of Stanford faculty and scholars conducts interdisciplinary research, convenes multi-stakeholder discussions, and develops tangible recommendations for policymakers that help ensure healthcare AI can benefit patients, doctors, and developers alike.

Tracking the U.S. AI Executive Order

HAI and RegLab are closely following and assessing the U.S. government’s implementation of its October 2023 Executive Order on AI through the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy AI EO Tracker—a detailed, line-level tracker of the 150 requirements that agencies and other federal entities must implement.
