Support Faculty
At the Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Institute, endowments play a pivotal role in advancing our mission to foster research, education, and innovation in the field of AI.
Your support helps establish dedicated endowments that are essential for driving human-centered AI forward.
We seek funding to attract Senior Fellows who will lead critical research areas. Priority research areas include:
Science of Intelligence
Ambient Tech for Health, Wellness, and Aging
Foundation Model Research
Embodied and Spatial Intelligent/Robotics
Sustainability

Support Endowments
Endowments generate income to support a faculty member and are established with a minimum gift of $6 million.
HAI also seeks $2 million in launch funds to accelerate new faculty members' work at Stanford. Matching funds are available for senior fellows.
Faculty may also be supported through research partnerships through the HAI Affiliate program.
Support the Stanford HAI Director's Fund
Empower the future of human-centered AI by contributing to the Stanford HAI Director's Fund. Your support enables our faculty to initiate innovative research, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, attract top talent, enhance educational opportunities, and respond quickly to emerging challenges in AI.

Support Students
Fostering the next generation of AI leaders
HAI is committed to fostering a diverse range of voices in AI research, education, and policy, which includes an intentional investment in the next generation of AI thinkers. HAI is developing the following programs to strengthen the young scholar AI community.
Postdoc Fellow Program
HAI’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers opportunities to explore topics, conduct research, and collaborate across disciplines related to AI technologies, applications, or impact. Each year we identify key areas where HAI would like to accelerate research and focus the fellow cohort on those areas. Currently, the research areas are AI+Sustainability, Human-Computer Interaction, and Equity and Diversity in AI. HAI provides stipends to graduate students supported by private philanthropy and the HAI Directors Fund.
Graduate Fellow Program
HAI offers a three-quarter program for Stanford Graduate Students. The goal of this program is to encourage interdisciplinary research conversations, facilitate new collaborations, and grow the HAI community of graduate scholars who are working in the area of AI, broadly defined. The fellowship fosters collaboration between engineers, social scientists, humanists, and others researching the future of purposeful, intentional, and human-centered AI. HAI provides support to nurture this community in the form of stipends and community building supported by private philanthropy and the HAI Directors Fund.
Student Affinity Groups
In January 2023, HAI launched its student affinity group program. The program invites students from any of Stanford’s seven schools to identify a topic of interest to pursue and recruit their own small group of interdisciplinary teammates. Projects run for the academic year and are eligible for funding to cover basic expenses.
Support Fellowships
Our commitment to nurturing talent is reflected in our fellowship programs for graduate students, which includes PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. With a target of $2 million, these fellowships ensure that the brightest minds can focus on their research, contributing to a rich environment of learning and discovery.
Support Endowments
Endowments generate income to support a graduate student and are established with a minimum gift of $2 million. Matching funds are available.
Support Grant Programs
Join us in shaping the future of artificial intelligence by supporting the HAI Grant Programs. Your contribution plays a pivotal role in propelling innovative research that addresses the most pressing challenges and opportunities in AI.
Why Support Our Grant Programs?
At HAI, we believe that interdisciplinary collaboration is essential to harnessing the full potential of AI for the betterment of society. Our grant programs have already supported over 348 faculty members across diverse fields, driving impactful research that spans technology, ethics, policy, and social implications.
Your support enables us to:
Catalyze Innovative Research: Funding seed grants allows researchers to explore groundbreaking ideas that push the boundaries of AI, such as understanding its societal impact, augmenting human capabilities, and developing ethically-informed technologies.
Promote Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Our grant programs foster partnerships across various departments and disciplines, ensuring a holistic approach to AI research that reflects a diverse range of perspectives.
Empower Emerging Scholars: By providing resources to new investigators and established researchers alike, we help cultivate the next generation of leaders in AI, equipping them with the tools they need to advance knowledge in this rapidly evolving field.
Scale Our Impact: As advancements in AI continue to accelerate, your investment allows us to initiate new research opportunities quickly and effectively, addressing real-world challenges as they arise.

Your support can make a significant difference, whether through a one-time contribution or an ongoing endowment.
Support:
Seed Grant Projects: Contribute $100,000 to fund an innovative research project that can make a lasting impact. Contributions support a team in the next annual grant cycle.
Full Tracks of Seed Grants: Support an entire research track with a gift of $1 million, enabling a focused exploration of key AI issues (example: Education, Health, Sustainability).
Endowment Goal: Help us reach our goal of $30 million to fully endow our seed grant program, ensuring sustained funding for future generations of researchers.

Support Policy Programs
Creating the Trusted Global Leader for AI Policy
At HAI, we aspire to be the globally recognized hub for AI policy and address critical gaps in the landscape.
the gap we've identified | how we propose to address | so we can achieve what |
---|---|---|
Policy Innovation | Research and advance signature AI policy ideas like the National AI Research Resource | Effect actual policy changes that support AI for public good |
Information Asymmetry | Create robust two-way pathways between Stanford and policymakers to learn and engage | Educate policymakers with trusted experts |
Talent Supply | Create programs for technical students to learn about policy and pursue related careers | Secure technical experts in policy-focused roles |
Marketplace | Host signature annual programs, both targeted and comprehensive in focus, on AI policy | Be the place for stakeholders to exchange information, ideas, and talent |
Support our policy efforts:
Advance Policy Innovation: Help launch our Foundation Model Governance Initiative, which conducts rigorous inquiries into developing and governing AI tools. Securing resources for faculty leadership in this area is critical as we leverage Stanford's assets to transition policy from ideation to real-world impact.
Educate Policymakers at All Levels: Create two-way paths between Stanford experts and global policymakers through program engagement and the proposed Global Policymakers in Residence initiative, which invites leaders to campus for extended collaboration.
Build a Technical Talent Supply for Policymaking: Increase the supply of skilled professionals who combine technical and policy expertise through our Fellowship Programs, placing students in key government roles and facilitating PhD and postdoctoral fellowships.
Support The Policy Program Fund
Drive impactful change in the field of AI governance. By contributing at any level, you help support vital initiatives that bridge technology and policy.
Your contributions fuel:

Support the AI Index
The AI Index is an independent initiative at HAI led by the AI Index Steering Committee, a diverse team of experts ranging from academia to industry.
The AI Index is an annual report monitoring the progress of artificial intelligence through data visualization and original analysis. The report measures and assesses the rapid rate of advancement in AI, from research and development to technical performance and ethics, economics and education, policy and governance, diversity, public opinion, and more. This enables policymakers, researchers, journalists, executives, and the general public to gain a deeper understanding of the complex world of AI, leading to informed decisions that prioritize advances in ethical, human-centered AI.
Moving forward, we aim to expand the AI Index to provide even more comprehensive, forward-looking data and analysis on AI progress and impacts. This includes additional coverage of relevant AI domains, additional indicators that are interactive and dynamic, expanded global data collection and more original research and visualizations to make complex AI trends accessible to all audiences. The AI Index would also like to expand sections to include arts and humanities, finance, and sustainability.
