External Bio

Tyler Smith is a graduate student in Stanford's Ford Dorsey Master’s in International Policy program, specializing in Cyber Policy and Security. His research focuses on the intersection of geopolitics, AI governance, and emerging technology regulation. Tyler has contributed to AI and foreign policy work at the Atlantic Council’s GeoTech Center, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the International Trade Administration. As a 2024 Rangel Fellow, he will join the U.S. Foreign Service, most recently serving in the Economic and Policy section of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore to advance cooperation on AI, digital economy, and cybersecurity issues.

Tyler’s research centers on the geopolitics of AI, with a focus on Southeast Asia’s emerging AI ecosystems, U.S.-China technological competition, and supply chain resilience. At Stanford, he has produced papers mapping China’s role in global cobalt supply chains and the influence of data localization policies on Southeast Asian economies.
