Ivan Lopez

HAI Graduate Fellow

Ivan Lopez is an MD-PhD student in Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University. With a foundation in Physiological Sciences, holding both BS and MS degrees from UCLA, Ivan has transitioned to Stanford, where he actively pursues research at the intersection of data science and medicine. Ivan's research interests are focused on the application of deep learning techniques to develop innovative algorithms and tools that enhance healthcare delivery. His most recent project involved the design and implementation of an NLP-powered system capable of identifying and auto-triaging concerning patient messages. This system reduced the response time for patients in crisis from an average of 10 hours to under 10 minutes. Since its deployment, his system has successfully connected thousands of patients in crisis with specialists. Currently, Ivan is collaborating with healthcare leaders to develop a novel AI tool that empowers crisis counselors to provide more effective, timely, and consistent support to patients in crisis. Beyond crisis intervention, Ivan is also passionate about utilizing AI for health equity. He is currently leading projects leveraging NLP to improve healthcare delivery for patients with limited English proficiency and employing deep learning algorithms to analyze medical imaging data to improve cardiovascular care for all patients.
