Jonas Kloeckner

HAI Postdoctoral Fellow

Jonas Kloeckner is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. His research focuses on forecasting and exploring Earth’s resources to support sustainable energy production while examining their environmental and societal impacts. Jonas specializes in developing data-driven methodologies for uncertainty quantification, prediction, and decision analysis in subsurface systems. He earned his Ph.D. (2023) and M.Sc. (2018) in mineral resources engineering and a B.Eng. (2016) in mining engineering. Jonas has been awarded scholarships for exchange programs at prestigious institutions, including Columbia University (2012), Ecole des Mines d’Alès (2013), and Stanford University (2022). As the global shift toward renewable energy intensifies, the demand for critical minerals like Nickel, Cobalt, Copper, and Lithium has surged, driven by their essential role in battery production and electrification. While AI technologies offer the potential to accelerate the exploration of these minerals, they also bring significant environmental and human challenges, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like the Amazon rainforest, where many of these resources are found. Jonas is focused on leveraging AI to enable smarter, more responsible exploration practices that prioritize sustainability and minimize critical mineral extraction's environmental and social impacts.
