HAI faculty offer independent critique of the AI debates of the moment.

This session takes on the argument running underneath most current AI policy debates: whether the technology poses a genuine risk to humanity, and whether its pace of development can or should slow. Rob Reich (Stanford Political Science, HAI) will bring a political philosopher's account of how societies govern frontier science, and why leaving the critical decisions to researchers who answer to corporate leadership is a pattern with a poor track record. Diyi Yang (Stanford Computer Science, HAI) will bring the view from inside the systems themselves, where her group's research on AI agents in the workplace and on model failures across dialects and cultures documents harms already measurable today. And Amy Zegart (Hoover Institution, HAI) will bring the national security view, drawing on two decades advising senior officials on what happens when powerful, unpredictable technology outpaces the institutions meant to oversee it. HAI Executive Director Russell Wald will moderate.
