The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI is pleased to announce that global financial services corporation American Express (Amex) has joined as a member of the Stanford HAI Corporate Affiliate Program’s Financial Services focus area.

The focus area is geared specifically to the finance sector, focusing on banks, fintech, insurance, and other financial services institutions in areas including responsible AI, human-centered design, human-computer interaction, and more.

Amex will work with faculty and students to better understand advances in foundation models, AI safety, and the digital economy.

“At HAI, enhancing the human-centric aspect of AI in its downstream applications is a key part of our mission,” says Panos Madamopoulos-Moraris, Stanford HAI’s Managing Director for Industry Programs and Partnerships. “The payments industry significantly influences the daily lives of billions around the globe. We're thrilled to welcome Amex into HAI's affiliate program, as they embark on fundamental research in areas crucial to Stanford researchers.”

“Stanford HAI plays a pivotal role in understanding and accelerating foundation models and considering AI's societal impacts,” said James Landay, vice director and director of research for Stanford HAI. “We look forward to collaborating with Amex as a corporate affiliate member as we explore new and exciting uses of this technology.”

“American Express has a long history of employing new technologies to deliver innovative products, services, and experiences that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Ravi Radhakrishnan, Chief Information Officer of American Express. “The work of Stanford HAI aligns with our brand promise of trust, service, and security, as well as our ongoing commitment to keep our customers at the center of everything we do. We are excited to collaborate with the HAI community on research areas that will accelerate the responsible application of artificial intelligence, including generative AI.”

The HAI Corporate Affiliate Program engages with companies that share HAI’s mission to advance AI research, education, policy, and practice to improve the human condition. The program provides the opportunity for these companies to interact with Stanford faculty as well as other corporate members, through educational experiences, lectures, research, and more.
