Dr. James Zou developed the popular “The Value of Data and AI” course at Stanford University  with Dr. Stephen Eglash and Dr. Matei Zaharia, and is Faculty Director for the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) Executive Education course of the same title.

Dr. Zou is Assistant Professor of Biomedical Data Science and, by courtesy, of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He is a Stanford HAI Faculty Affiliate, a Chan-Zuckerberg investigator, and the faculty director of Stanford AI for Health. As a technologist, Dr. Zou develops novel machine learning algorithms that have strong statistical guarantees and that are motivated by human health challenges. Several of his methods are widely used in industry-- including in tech, biotech, insurance, and more. He also works on questions important for the broader impacts of AI—fairness, accountability, interpretations, robustness, and the economic impacts of data and AI to firms and industry. He has received several best paper awards at top CS venues, the 2019 RECOMB best paper award, a NSF CAREER Award, a Google Faculty Award, and a Tencent AI award.
